Core Purpose

The role of the Cover teacher is to teach classes during the absence of other teaching staff. This may be short-notice one-off cover lessons or more extended periods of absence. The post holder will deliver lessons, manage classes of students effectively, provide guidance for the work set by teachers, ensuring that students remain focused, engaged, and make progress during their lesson time. Where subject specialism permits, the cover teacher should play an active role in delivering lesson content, especially if a teacher is on a prolonged absence. This role is pivotal in supporting the continuity of learning within the school and maintaining a positive, orderly learning environment.
