Job Description

Doctoral Researcher

In the Ionospheric Physics research group at the Faculty of Science, you will study the effects of solar storms and space weather on the ionosphere–thermosphere system. Your tasks include using global data‑driven modelling based on SuperDARN, SuperMAG and AMPERE data to estimate ionospheric Joule heating, comparing it with thermospheric neutral mass density variations measured by satellites such as Swarm, GRACE and GOCE, and investigating the resulting changes in atmospheric drag experienced by satellites at low‑Earth orbits. Additionally, you will develop physics‑informed machine‑learning methods from these results.

What we offer

  • The support of an experienced and enthusiastic team of about twenty people at the University of Oulu and the nationwide Space Resilience Centre of Excellence community distributed across the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the University of Turku.
